Getting Married at The Gatsby, Berkhamsted

I’ve been lucky to photograph one wedding at The Gatsby in Berkhamsted, Herts.  Its unique art deco opulence made for some amazing backdrops, and I’d love to return!

The Gatsby is a beautiful restaurant and wedding venue in Berkhamsted High Street serving modern European cuisine. Both the restaurant and the gorgeous piano cocktail bar sit within the fabulously ornate 1930’s Rex art-deco cinema.

When The Rex cinema first opened in 1938, people flocked to see the Hollywood stars on the big screens within this opulent art deco building. However in the 1980s, the owners were forced to close the cinema due to falling audience figures.

This sleeping beauty opened its doors once again in 2004 after a campaign to save the cinema by a local business man. Thhe restored independent cinema is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful in Britain. Once again the cinema sells out night after night as the public clamour for a slice of this by gone era.

Photographing weddings at The Gatsby

You enter The Gatsby restaurant through the original high ceilinged cinema foyer, and the perfectly restored art-deco building now offers the perfect place to relax, eat and drink in dramatic surroundings. The buzz and party atmosphere is incredible within The Gatsby’s intimate surroundings.

I just love the Rex and The Gatsby. I feel like I’m stepping back in time to the 1930s and the Golden Age of Hollywood! If you love glitz, glamour and cocktails I’m sure you’ll love this place too. It’s also great for wedding photography. For example, the high ceilings, dramatic period lighting and Art Deco surroundings means I’m spoilt for fabulous picture backdrops.
